Step 2: Cut out heart shapes

  • Print heart templates onto cardstock and then cut them out. Or you can draw your own heart shapes.

Step 3: Prepare the tray

  • Add shaving cream to a baking tray.

  • Spread the shaving cream with a spatula, if needed, to even it out.

  • Squeeze lines of paint on top of the shaving cream in random patterns.

  • Continue adding paint to the tray in one colour or different colours until it's evenly covered, as shown in the photo below. We used three shades of red for ours, but you can add any colours you like.

  • Swirl the paint around with a stir stick. Move up and down across the tray, and also side to side.

Then move the stir stick in a curved motion until most of the shaving cream is covered in paint, with only small areas of white showing through.

Step 4: Create marbled shaving cream hearts

  • Place a cardstock heart into the paint with the black outline side facing up (if you used our template). Press the heart down on the edges slightly so the whole shape gets covered in the mixture. You can also use the clean end of the stir stick to press down the edges.

Let the heart sit in the shaving cream and paint for about 10 seconds.

  • Carefully peel the cardstock heart off the shaving cream and place it on a clean tray, shaving cream side up.

Grab an edge of the heart with a fingertip and use a squeegee (or a plastic ruler) to remove any extra shaving cream and paint. Use firm pressure for best results.

  • Repeat with any other hearts you cut out, and allow them to dry on paper towel for about half an hour.

Helpful Tips:

  1. Be sure to have lots of paper towels or a wet rag handy while you make your hearts – it can definitely get messy!
  2. We used the medium sized heart templates to make these marbled shaving cream hearts.

What paint is used to make shaving cream hearts?

We used acrylic paint, mostly because it allowed us to use several different shades of the same colour. But you can also use tempera paint or liquid watercolours. You can even use drops of food colouring in the shaving cream to colour your hearts!

What paper works best for shaving cream art?

You need to use a paper thick enough to hold shaving cream and paint without ripping. Cardstock is a great choice, but you can also use watercolour paper.

What if I don’t have a squeegee?

A squeegee does the best job removing the shaving cream and extra paint from the cardstock hearts. But you could also use a plastic ruler, putty knife, or an expired gift card.

We tried using a piece of cardboard to scrape off the shaving cream, but we don’t recommend it. It smudges and streaks the paint instead of removing the shaving cream cleanly. Plus the cardboard got soggy and unusable after using it a couple of times.

How many trays can I make with one can of shaving cream?

An 11 ounce (311 gram) can of shaving cream filled 3 large trays (12 x 18 inches) before it was empty. We were able to make approximately 8 marbled hearts per tray. This will of course depend on the size of tray you use and the size of hearts you make.

Do I have to cut the hearts out first?

You can cut the hearts out before marbling them, like we did, or you can press a whole sheet of cardstock into the tray and cut the hearts (or any shape) out afterwards!

How many times can the paint be used?

The hearts definitely look the best when they’re pressed into the freshly swirled paint, but you can use the same spot a second time — the marbling effect just isn’t quite as clear.

What size homemade Valentine’s Day cards did you make?

We cut cardstock to 7 x 10 inches and folded the 10 inch part in half, making a 5 x 7 inch greeting card. You can also buy blank cards that size. Our medium sized heart outlines fit perfectly onto 5 x 7 cards!
